Houston Houston – SPECIAL NAVIDAD SHOPPING GUIDE EDITION – Arts – page 1 – Houston Press

This weeks Ask A Mexican! column is about one of my favorite topics, books. In fact he lists a few books that I read and encountered this semester.

  • Pocho, José Antonio Villarreal
  • North from Mexico: The Spanish-Speaking People of the United States, Carey McWilliams
  • Aztlán & Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the Wars so [gabachos] learn that our gente fight in their wars.
  • Also, fiction by Tomás Rivera, (…And the Earth Did Not Swallow Him)
  • Dagoberto Gilb (the collection called Gritos)
  • and Alejandro Morales (The Brick People).

Thanks to Dr. Creighton at UHD, I have a better understanding of the vast array of Chicano literature that IS there. In addition to those listed I would recommend:

  • Under the Feet of Jesus- Helena Maria Viramontez
  • Hecho En Tejas – Dagoberto Gilb
  • La Relacion – Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
  • Broken Spears – Ed. Miguel Leon-Portilla
  • The Shadow – Americo Paredes

There were more, but that is all I am listing now. It is a good start.
