Tips for the New Freshman

by brownboyrocks on June 8, 2009

So it’s your first time on a big college campus, and its not like the pretty Universities you’ve seen in the movies either. At UH-D we have the privilege of being neighbors to a wide mix colorful characters that may or may not be as hygenic as you might like. In this new and generally overwhelming set of circumstances an unprepared student may feel a great deal of anxiety, but with a few key pointers anyone can glide right through the Advising and Registration process at UH-D.

Step 1: Do Your Homework

Like everything in life, being proactive about your goals is the only way to make them happen. When you first decide to attend UH-D it is a good idea to look at what degrees the school offers. Taking advantage of the extensive information provided on the university’s website: http://www.uhd.edu.

– Some things to look at in-depth are:

- Colleges and Degrees Offered
- University College Academic Advising
- Classes being offered in the upcoming semester.

By doing some of this research before you see the advisor, you will be much better prepared to help the advisor help you pick your classes.

Step 2: Going to See Your Advisor

In the University College Academic Advising Office, the advisors are not your high school guidance counselor, they’re not your mom, or your significant other. This is why it is so crucial for step 1 to be completed before seeing an advisor. It makes everyone’s life easier if you show up to S-370 as prepared as you can possibly be. Once there you can use the pen/pencil that you brought with you to fill out the Academic Advising Form with the list of classes you chose while doing your research for step one. Being able to master the art of course approval at UH-D is your first step to having a succesful and enjoyable college experience.

Step 3: Registering for Your Classes

Back to Step 1 because when you chose your classes, you hopefully wrote down the CRN (Course Registration Number) for those classes. If not, a quick trip to Student E-Services and the Class Schedule will provide the much needed CRN as well as all of the logistical information for every class being offered. Once you have arranged your schedule to suit your job, family needs, and personal sanity, take the corresponding CRN’s to My Registration & Schedule and use the Add/Drop program to register youself for the classes you chose.

Step 4: Pay Your Tuition

Once you register you must follow up and arrange for your tuition to be paid. Always double check with the Scholarship and FinAid office to verify funds will be made available BEFORE the day to pay. If you do not make payment by the official day to pay your classes will be dropped, and you may have to take different classes. To get the exact dates for official school deadlines look up the Academic Calendars on E-Services.

I hope this helps a little bit. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Being able to successfully register for your classes on your own will seem like an accomplishment the first time, but after your third semester it’ll be just another day on you way to a college degree.
