Sunday Stories: Miranda Rights, Mom, and Thoughts of Graduation

Sunday Stories:

The Sunday talk shows were all about Faizal Shahzad’s citizenship and him being given full protection of his Miranda Rights. On one side you have zionist war-mongers like Joe Lieberman introducing legislation to strip citizenship from people suspected of committing crimes against the United States.

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) announced plans to introduce legislation to strip the citizenship rights of Americans who commit acts of terrorism, a proposal already drawing support from both parties.

It doesn’t surprise me that the spineless, power hungry people in Washington would suggest something like this. I would like to say that I “know” Democrats would oppose such an anti-American law, but Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has already expressed support for Lieberman’s bill. Eric Holder (U.S. Attorney General) made the talk show rounds today to let everyone know that Shahzad was operating with the aid of the Taliban in Pakistan, and while he was at it, made it clear what he thought of Lieberman’s bill:

In an interview on “This Week,” Holder said that the U.S. needs to exam whether the current rules regarding Miranda warnings give law enforcement agents the “necessary flexibility” when dealing with terrorism cases.

“If we are going to have a system that is capable of dealing, in a public safety context, with this new threat,” Holder said, “I think we have to give serious consideration to at least modifying that public safety exception” of Miranda warnings, which allows law enforcement agents to ask suspects about impending threats before reading them their rights.

But that’s not the most annoying thing Eric Holder said today. When asked if Arizona SB1070 was racist or not, the Attorney General of the United States, denied what most have already acknowledged, and proven.

Holder said, “I don’t think it’s racist in its motivation.  But I think the concern I have is how it will be perceived and how it perhaps could be enacted, how it could be carried out.  I think we could potentially get on a slippery slope where people will be picked on because of how they look as opposed to what they have done, and that is I think something that we have to try to avoid at all costs.”

What a cop-out. I know I should not expect anything more from a professional suit, but for the man who once said, “we’re a nation of cowards for not wanting to have real discussions about race,” his denial of racism being codified into law is disgusting. How anyone can deny the racism being given free reign is unknown to me. A post on Gawker today reveals the widespread hatred and animosity being aimed at anyone who may look “Mexican”. They report on a story done by a Seattle news station about two guys who happened to be caught “Walking Down the Street While Mexican”. The two young men were detained, thrown on the ground, and kicked, only to be sent on their way because they were completely innocent. Stories like these make it hard to believe that what is going on in Arizona (Joe ‘el Alacrán‘ Arpaio, Jan Brewer, and most of all Russell Pearce) is an isolated example of border and immigration problems. Come on, A.G. Holder, tell us what you really think, or be straight about your own cowardice.

This is why we need to start hitting the Show Me Your Paper’s State with a boycott the likes it has never seen before. I am in the process of moving my Web hosting account for this site (and a few others) to a new host that is not based in Arizona. (I am currently using GoDaddy, and their corporate headquarters is based in Flagstaff.) I have stopped shopping at PetsMart, Randalls (a Safeway chain), and I will not be buying the new set of tires I need from Discount Tire. I am trying to find other places in my life where I can institute this boycott, and until then I urge you to do the same.

Happy Mother’s Day:

In other news, it’s Mother’s Day Today. I have a lot of Mom’s in my life that are simply amazing women, and my Mom is definitely at the top of that list. Hardworking, compassionate, caring, and always loving, my Mom has been there for me when I have needed her and when I haven’t. She’s giving me the strength and personal fortitude to accomplish the goals I have set in my life. Thank you, Mom. I love you.

Graduation Day Inches Closer

As I get closer to the day I walk across the stage to receive a fake diploma (the real one comes later), I feel the need to reflect on some of the issues and problems I came across while at UH-D. In the next few days, I’ll post some thoughts about the Name Change, the Future of UH-D, and reflect on some of the great relationships I built while there.
