Fernando Herrera: Homophobic Misogynist Running for Houston Mayor

by JaimeRafael on July 7, 2011

I first wrote about Fernando Herrera when he ran a scurrilous campaign against incumbent state representative of Texas HD148, Jessica Farrar. Mr. Herrera’s campaign sent out mail pieces attacking Rep. Farrar for her tireless work in support of women’s health and even went so far as to say that the champion for Texas women and children supports “infanticide.”

Jessica’s work spoke for itself and she won her race with an 18 point difference. Now that the 2011 Houston Municipal election is underway, Fernando Herrero is showing his ugly self once more. Herrera is running as a Tea Party Republican against incumbent Mayor Annise Parker.

It did not take Fernando Herrera long to start his personal attacks against the Mayor. You might be saying… but hey ConFrijoles… you’ve criticized the Mayor too, and that’s true. I have criticized the current administration for policy issues that have been less than suitable to my personal political palate. I have not, however, debased myself in the way Fernando Herrera has debased himself and his campaign. He posted a Facebook comment questioning the city’s use of marketing budget to attract more LGBTQ visitors to Houston. On top of being the statement of a bigot, it is the statement of a person who would govern out of malice and spite.

While I don’t agree with several of the Parker administration’s policy choices, I refuse to support a despicable person such as Fernando Herrera. He should crawl back into whatever hole he came out of.

(Full disclosure: I have been critical of Mayor Parker’s administration for policy issues.)
